HYATTSVILLE CITY POLICE DEPARTMENT - WRITTEN EXAM PREPARATION TIPS

About the exam:

The exam is considered a general knowledge test.  That is, the information contained in the exam is knowledge that you should already know.  Although there is an optional study guide available, it is not required for successful completion of the exam.  The test does not contain questions that would require any specialized training or education.  Applicants with advanced education, such as the police academy, are urged to keep this in mind and not read too much into any of the questions.

The exam is broken down into four sections.  They are:
1. Arithmetic (General mathematics)
2. Reading Comprehension
3. Grammar
4. Incident Report Writing

Preparing for the exam:

"An important component of successful test-taking is mental and physical well-being.  People who want to perform their best on a test prepare themselves beforehand, much like athletes do before a competition.  They know that feeling physically well and mentally alert will increase their chances of doing well."
- Stanards & Associates

For best performance:

1. Avoid junk food and concentrate on eating well balanced meals for at least several days before the test.
2. Avoid stimulants and depressants, such as caffeine and alcohol on the days leading up to the exam.
3. Get a good night's sleep before the exam.
4. Don't drink a large amount of fluids or eat a big meal shortly before taking the test.
